UAE National Olympic Committee Participates in the General Assembly of the Arab National Olympic Committees in Jordan

The UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC) participated in the 22nd General Assembly of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees (UANOC), hosted in Amman, Jordan, on Thursday. The meeting addressed various significant topics and approved several reports on its agenda.

Representing the UAE NOC at the meeting were H.E. Hanan Al Mahmoud, Member of the NOC Board, and H.E. Mohammed Bin Darwish, Executive Director of the NOC. The meeting was chaired by HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, President of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees (UANOC) and included representatives from 22 Arab National Olympic Committees.

During the assembly, Bahrain was awarded the hosting rights for the 17th Arab Games in 2031, while Jordan was granted the rights to host the 18th Arab Games in 2035. The General Assembly also approved the final report of the 15th Arab Games held in Algeria in 2023 and the Arab Women’s Clubs Games scheduled in Sharjah for 2024. Furthermore, the 2023 annual report, financial statements, and the independent auditor’s report for the fiscal year ending December 2023 were reviewed and approved.

The meeting highlighted reports on the 15th Arab Games in Algeria (2023) and the 7th Arab Women’s Clubs Games held in Sharjah in February 2024. Discussions also addressed amendments to decisions from the 20th General Assembly, held in December 2021. The assembly reiterated its dedication to advancing sports by approving strategic plans and initiatives.

On the sidelines of the Executive Board and General Assembly meetings, the UAE NOC delegation, in the presence of H.E. Sultan Bin Sheikh Mejrin, Member of the UANOC Executive Board, presented a commemorative shield to HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal and H.E. Engineer Yazan Al Shdeifat, Jordan’s Minister of Youth and Vice President of the Jordanian Olympic Committee.

Established in 1976 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the UANOC was initially named the Arab Sports Federation and was headquartered in Riyadh. In 2008, during the 12th General Assembly in Jeddah, its name was changed to the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees to reflect its evolving role.

H.E. Sultan Bin Mejrin praised the UAE NOC's active participation in the Executive Board and General Assembly meetings, which took place in Jordan from 20 to 22 November 2024.

He stated: "The UAE National Olympic Committee’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration with Arab National Olympic Committees. These efforts significantly contribute to achieving the Union's goals and advancing sports in the region. The meetings provided an excellent platform to exchange ideas and formulate strategic plans to support Arab sports at both regional and international levels."

He added: "We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, President of the UANOC, for his remarkable efforts in advancing the Arab Olympic movement and promoting sports integration among member states. His visionary leadership and unwavering support have been instrumental in achieving significant progress in Arab sports development."

H.E. Bin Mejrin also expressed gratitude to Jordan and the Jordanian Olympic Committee for their exceptional hospitality and organization, stating:"We thank the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for their warm reception and outstanding organisation, which created an ideal environment for the success of these important meetings. We also extend our gratitude to the Jordanian Olympic Committee for their efforts in strengthening collaboration among Arab National Olympic Committees.
