UAE Olympic Committee Promotes Awareness and Integrity in Sport
The UAE Olympic Committee took part on Tuesday morning, via video conference, in an awareness and capacity-building course on the prevention of the manipulation of sports competitions. The course was organised in cooperation with the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, as part of joint efforts to promote integrity, transparency and awareness of the risks of manipulation in sport.
The UAE Olympic Committee was represented by Butti Ahmed Al Abdooli, Director of Sports Federations Affairs at the Committee. The course was attended by a group of athletes and personnel from national sports federations and clubs, along with representatives of the International Olympic Committee and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).
The course addressed a range of topics related to the manipulation of sports competitions, including its definition, forms, impact and potential sanctions. It also reviewed the four basic rules associated with preventing manipulation, the responsibilities of athletes and sports personnel, and the mechanisms for reporting suspicious cases and practices.
The course also reviewed the two main dimensions of addressing the manipulation of sports competitions: the sporting and disciplinary dimension, and the dimension related to criminal law enforcement. It further covered the Olympic Movement’s strategy for combating competition manipulation, the applicable regulatory framework and rules, and the role of sports institutions in regulation, awareness-raising and information gathering.
The course included a presentation by INTERPOL representatives on the organisation’s international efforts to combat the manipulation of sports competitions, with a review of several practical cases and examples. It also discussed the role of the UAE Olympic Committee in enhancing operational readiness and national cooperation among relevant entities to address such practices.
he course aimed to raise awareness among athletes and personnel in sports federations of their roles and responsibilities in preventing competition manipulation, and to familiarise them with the applicable rules, controls and reporting mechanisms, thereby contributing to strengthening the principles of integrity and protecting sports competitions.
The UAE Olympic Committee had earlier circulated a communication to all sports federations, emphasising the importance of attendance by athletes and members of the technical and administrative staff working with federations and clubs under its umbrella, particularly those participating in upcoming sporting events as part of UAE Olympic Committee delegations, given the importance of this area and its direct connection with integrity requirements and the prevention of competition manipulation.
The UAE will participate in a number of major sporting events in the coming period, foremost among them the 20th Asian Games, to be hosted by the Japanese cities of Aichi and Nagoya from 19 September to 4 October 2026, with the participation of more than 11,000 athletes and 6,000 coaches and officials representing 45 countries.
The UAE will take part in the Games with a delegation of 165 male and female athletes, comprising 117 male and 48 female athletes, competing in 23 sports. The UAE will also participate in the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games, to be hosted by the Senegalese capital Dakar from 31 October to 13 November, where the UAE will be represented by 15 male and female athletes, comprising 9 male and 6 female athletes, competing in 10 sports
